Egyptian Shabti

$1,500.00Price
Important 6” tall Egyptian Shabtis.

Shabtis were placed in tombs to represent servants who would perform labor for the deceased in the afterlife. The ancient Egyptians believed in a continuation of life after death, and they wanted to ensure that their loved ones would have everything they needed in the afterlife, including labor. Shabtis were commonly made of blue or green glazed Egyptian faience, but could also be made of stone, wood, clay, metal, or glass. Shabtis were often inscribed with spells or phrases that would ensure their effectiveness in the afterlife, and the owner's name was also inscribed on them. Initially, only one shabti might be placed in a tomb, but over time, the number of shabtis increased, with some nobles having hundreds.  Some shabtis were depicted holding tools like hoes or baskets, suggesting their role in agricultural labor. One possible translation for "shabti" is "answerer", as they were believed to answer their master's call to work in the afterlife.
